Corvo is the smallest of the nine Azores islands, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth a visit! Corvo is a lovely little island with a lot of charm, even if it only has a population of about 400 people year-round. If you love nature, Corvo is one of the best islands to visit. Now let’s get into some of the best things to do in Corvo, Azores!

Take a hike around the Corvo Caldeirão

The Caldeirão has to be the single biggest drawing point on Corvo. This extinct volcano provides visitors with a beautiful hike around the rim. On the trail, you’ll get views of the lakes that formed on the bottom alongside the numerous pastures along the walls. We need to warn that it can get foggy and windy at the top!

Spend some time in Vila do Corvo

Vila do Corvo is the main and only village on the island, so you will be spending some time here if you stay for more than a day. It is the place to appreciate the island’s architecture, learn about the history, and enjoy local food and culture. A small museum, called Museu do Corvo or Ecomuseu do Corvo, also sits in town and is worth a visit. While visiting, stop at the city center and the town’s main attraction, the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Milagres.

Make a stop at the Moinhos do Corvo

On the south coast of the island facing Flores, you will find windmills known as the Moinhos do Corvo. This is a great photo spot for sunset with a beautiful view of the island of Flores. A small building called, Casa do Bote, sits near the windmills and is the local tourism office. There, visitors can learn about the boats locals used for whaling on the island. The moinhos combined with the Casa offer a great peek into the history of life in the Azores.

Take a day trip to the island of Flores

South of Corvo lies the beautiful island of Flores. A common itinerary for this subregion of the Azores is to fly into either Flores or Corvo, and then take a day trip to the other. For our itinerary, we flew to Corvo, explored the attractions, and then took a small ferry across to Flores. Disclaimer: the ferry ride is not for the faint of heart, or those who are susceptible to seasickness.

Appreciate the wildlife while bird watching

Corvo provides a unique opportunity for bird watchers and has become renowned for it. Due to its location in the Atlantic, the island welcomes a large variety of bird species, especially during the migratory season. If birdwatching is your thing, aim to plan your trip to Corvo in October for the best opportunity to view most of the species. Although, no matter what time of year you visit, At any time of year, make sure to have your binoculars or camera with you!

Just relax

As the smallest island with the lowest population of any municipality in the Azores, Corvo offers the best setting to relax. The island provides a perfect opportunity to unplug and unwind away from a big city or another busy day exploring. We recommend the small beach of Praia da Areia, in particular, to catch some sun and relax at the end of a long day exploring.

Corvo may be small, but you would be remiss to not make some time to visit. Whether you’re a seasoned birder, hiker, or looking for place to unwind, Corvo has many opportunities unique to the smallest island of the Azores.
