So, you are interested in taking your Azorean adventure to the smallest of the nine islands? We are happy to help you find your way around the hidden gem of Corvo. With only around 400 people year-round, Corvo is an easy island to explore, even if you only have one day. This itinerary will be straightforward, with some opportunities to go off the beaten path and discover more of Corvo’s beauty.
Breakfast at a local café
Whether flying in from one of the other islands or taking a Corvo boat tour from Flores, the best way to start any day in the Azores is in a local café with, you guessed it, the locals! Grab a coffee and some pastries or sandwiches to start your time off the plane or settle your stomach from the ferry ride. We grabbed coffee and some snacks at Caldeirão, Restaurante – Pastelaria, which is located just outside the Corvo airport terminal.
Corvo Caldeira
I’m of the opinion that you should hit the ground running once you start your trip, and what better way than to arrive on Corvo and head straight for the main attraction. The Caldeira is one of the best things to do on Corvo. It is the highest point on the island, where on a clear day, you can get wonderful views of the rest of Corvo and the neighboring island of Flores. Take a hike around the rim and enjoy the beauty of the pastures and lakes that have formed along the bottom of the crater. Just beware that it can get foggy and extremely windy up there!
Vila do Corvo
As the main and only village on the island, you will be at least spending some time here for meals and a hotel stay if you are staying the night. You should take the time to enjoy and explore the town a bit. Make sure to check out the small museum, the Museu du Corvo, and the main attraction of the town, the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Milagres.
Moinhos do Corvo
While exploring Vila do Corvo, make your way to the South side of the island, facing Flores. There, you will find the Moinhos do Corvo, AKA windmills. Here, they have some descriptions of the history of life in Corvo, but they are only in Portuguese, so make sure you have Google Translate downloaded if you aren’t a Portuguese speaker. While at the Moinhos, stop at the Casa do Bote, the local tourism office that doubles as a super tiny whaling museum, complete with an antique boat and the tools needed for whaling.
BONUS: Bird-Watching
Due to its position in the Atlantic, Corvo is a popular stop for migratory birds. If bird-watching is your thing, make sure to have your camera or a pair of binoculars handy for this trip. The best time for bird watching on Corvo is October when the largest variety of bird species visit the island. There is also the Corvo Wild Birds Interpretation Center in Vila do Corvo which is worth a stop for anyone interested in birding on the island.
While Corvo is the smallest of the Azores islands, it is definitely worth a visit. With this one-day itinerary, you should be able to hit all the best spots on the island. If you have some more time to spend, Corvo is an excellent place to escape and relax while enjoying the calm nature of the island.
